Trump Taxes

The Supreme Court on Monday rejected former president Donald Trump’s last-chance effort to keep his private financial records from the Manhattan district attorney.  This effectivelyt ends this long and drawn-out legal battle. (Washington Post)

Vance’s inquiry is one of two known criminal investigations involving the former president. The other, led by the district attorney in Fulton County, Georgia, focuses on Trump’s controversial coversations with state officials amid his failed effort to overturn that state’s election result.

Trump has waged an extraordinary battle to keep private his tax records, which every other modern president has released as an expected part of seeking the presidency. The court’s action does not mean Trump’s tax records are to become public — Vance has said they will be protected by grand jury secrecy rules — but is likely to accelerate an investigation that might be Trump’s biggest legal threat.

I thought Trump’s taxes were essentially made public last year when The New York Times published them for all to see?

The Real Jobless Rate

America’s official unemployment rate has declined sharply after rocketing up last year, but top government economic officials are increasingly citing a different figure — one that puts the jobless rate at nearly 10 percent (New York Times)

economists have worried for years that by relying on the headline rate, they are ignoring people they shouldn’t, including would-be employees who are not actively applying to work because they are discouraged or because they are waiting for the right opportunity. Looking at a more comprehensive slate of labor market measures — not just the jobless rate — came into style in a big way after the recession that stretched from 2007 to 2009.

$75 Oil Could Be A Reality Again

The latest forecasts from the commodities team at Goldman Sachs sees global benchmark Brent oil hitting $75 by the third quarter, $10 above their prior forecasts, and $70 by the second quarter. (Market Watch)

“We now forecast that oil prices will rally sooner and higher, driven by lower expected inventories and higher marginal costs — at least in the short run — to restart upstream activity,” said the team — Damien Courvalin, Callum Bruce, Jeffrey Currie and Huan Wei — in a note to clients dated Sunday.

Lumber Prices Skyrocket

Lumber prices have skyrocketed more than 180% since last spring, and this price spike has caused the price of an average new single-family home to increase by $24,386 since April 17, 2020 (NAHB)

Similarly, the market value of the average new multifamily home has increased by $8,998 over the same period due to the surge in lumber prices.  The latest Random Lengths prices as of mid-February show the price of framing lumber topped $975 per thousand board feet — a 180% increase since last April when the price was roughly $350 per thousand board feet.
